Hokkaido by season: choose the journey before the pictures
Hokkaido is large, and its distances shape planning more than any seasonal photograph. Begin with the experience: city and food, fields and driving, snow and sport, or wildlife. Only then choose an airport and number of nights.
Winter: choose snow deliberately
Winter suits snow cities, resorts and hot springs, but adds possible delays, slippery roads and shorter daylight. Make Sapporo an easy base and add Otaru or one resort. If you lack snow-driving experience, favor trains, buses or a reputable tour rather than renting a car simply for flexibility.
Summer: flower fields and cooler air
Furano and Biei draw visitors for flowers and rolling hills, but bloom timing varies by plant and weather. Reserve accommodation and transport early, and pick a few meaningful stops rather than chasing every field. Even in summer, bring a light layer for evenings and higher ground.
Spring and autumn: the shoulder seasons
Spring arrives later than in Tokyo, and winter cold can linger in some areas. Autumn begins early in higher and eastern regions. These periods can feel quieter, but require a current check of roads, gardens and seasonal transport before fixing the itinerary.
Choose one region deeply
For a few days, pair Sapporo and Otaru for food and city life; Asahikawa, Biei and Furano for scenery; or Kushiro and the east for wildlife. Moving between these hubs can consume a day. Read the door-to-door journey, not only the time printed beside a train.
Japwa field note: in Hokkaido, removing one stop often improves a trip more than adding a car. Space is part of the island's beauty.
